  1. Hi Moonlight,

I'm Leslie and I'm a member of the Summer Learning Journey, reading your blog from my home in Canada.

I see that you've written a story about what might happen if you opened your door after a storm. It's true, there probably would be a flood of water pouring through your door. And that's a problem!!

But I think you've misunderstand what's being asked of you. This activity teaches us about acid rain, which is rainwater mixed with toxic chemicals. There are places in the world, like Canada where I live, where acid rain has fallen out of the sky and caused some animals to become sick or die and some forests to be badly damaged. The toxic chemicals in the rain poison the water and the forests that they land on.

In Canada we started to notice that fish were dying in some of our lakes and that the lake water was becoming unusually acidic. We realized that this was because manufacturing companies were dumping chemicals into the air through their chimney stacks and these chemicals were mixing with the rain clouds. The result was acid rain. Yuck!!

Our government made new laws that required that companies stop polluting the air. As a result, a number of the lakes that were damaged before are much more healthy now, with fish in them. Yeah!

So, for this activity the idea is to write an imaginary story about what you think the world would look like if you had acid rain falling on your city, in your neighbourhood. Would the trees look healthy or green? Would the birds survive being covered in acid rain? What about the grass, would it still be lush?

I'm going to suggest you try writing another story, one that talks about how the world would look if we allowed pollution in the air to make our rain acidic. Ok?

I'll check your site again in a while to see if you've give this another try.

    Cheers,

    Leslie
