It's Leslie here, reading your blog from Canada as a member of the Summer Learning Journey team. I appreciate your honesty is saying that you don't really understand the story of the taniwha.
Did you watch the video that was linked to this activity page? It shows an eruption of very large bubbles that have been seen floating on the top of the water of the Waikato River from time to time. People suggest that there must be some kind of creature under the water creating these air bubbles, but no one knows what it is for sure. The ancient peoples who lived along the river believed that there were large, 'sacred'or mythical fish living in the deeps. It's hard to know whether that's true or not - it's a story that's been created to explain these strange bubbles.
People have always created stories to try to explain something that isn't fully understood or known. The stories can have a truth to them without always be 'factual'. So who knows whether or not there are enormous taniwha living in the Waikato? I don't feel I know enough to have a strong opinion about that either. Perhaps what's important is that we respect the river and try to live in a way that doesn't damage it or any creature that does live within its waters...
I hope you're getting out to swim at a beach or pool this summer, if you like swimming! And I hope you'll keep working hard at these activities. You're doing a great job!!
