It's Leslie here, a member of the Summer Learning Journey team reading your blog from my home in Canada where we also are concerned about the number of trees that are cut down each year.
Even though I live on the opposite side of the world from you, some of the challenges we have in Canada are the same as the ones you have in New Zealand. Isn't that amazing?!
You've made some good points with your answer that we need trees for house construction, but we don't want to take out too many trees because they help the planet breathe (they produce oxygen) and they provide homes (and food) for birds and animals.
There are always many things to consider when we try to make decisions about how to live carefully on the planet, aren't there? Hopefully we'll continue to try to use just what we need of the earth's resources, and no more. And that means that we can try to live with a minimum of things in our houses and we can try to look after what we have so that our things last a long time and we don't have to keep buying new.
I'm glad you're participating in the Summer Learning Program this summer, Moonlight. I'm sure you're finding it's giving you lots of things to think about. I'm finding that, for sure.
